what we're loving right now

we just can't get enough of wilco's new album...aptly titled wilco (the album).  these guys are great.  so needless to say the new album has been playing on repeat in the shop, in our cars and at home.  shoot, our graphic designer kathryn would give her first born to have jeff tweedy play at her birthday party (and who can blame her?).

Wilco_album_240

but our love for the tweedy talent doesn't end there.  alissa introduced us to paste magazine online which did a story about jeff's son spencer and his blog, which is hysterical.  check it out for yourself.

let's go(cco)!!!

gocco?  say what?!  turns out gocco is a japanese screenprinting device that makes a DIYer's heart race.  thanks to our newest part-timer betsy, rock paper scissors is now a little more in the know.  after work monday, betsy paid us a visit with gocco in tow and gave me and kathryn a quick lesson.  after creating carbon images, smearing on frosting-like paint, and exerting some manpower,  we're completely hooked at the possibility of making our own stationery, IOUs and wall art, and will most likely be found scouring ebay late into the night searching for our very own goccos.

Cleanliness is next to...wait, how does that phrase go again?

No, this is not a scene from a recent earthquake.
This is the desk of one, Katie M. Sale, Chief in-charge of everything and everyone here at Rock Paper Scissors. But from the looks of it, the power has completely thrown her over the edge. And she's usually such a sensible level-headed girl, tidy traits aside. Have you ever seen an area that looks like this? We mean, really, Katie. This is the desk of a crazy person.  Can any of you out there recommend the best plan of attack for a desk such as this?

SOS! SOS!
Love,
Katie's co-workers (many of whom are trapped beneath that pile next to the computer.)

the wait is almost over

what a weekend it's been!  we finally packed (and packed and packed and packed) up our little shop and have moved next to our sister store scarpa.  whew.  there's something about moving that reminds you why you never move in the first place.  where did we get all this stuff?!  thankfully with a staff full of efficient virgos and creative minds, we are settling in nicely and everything has a place (almost).  we still have a few boxes to unpack and some shelves to hang so we'll be closed tomorrow and will open on tuesday after a whirlwind five days.  but what fun it's been.  and the shops...WOW.  you must stop in to check out the new digs because they are be-auuu-ti-ful.  sophisticated scarpa has rubbed off on us a bit, but not to worry, you'll still be able to recognize the rps you've come to love.  our apologies that there are no before and after photos up at the moment.  our camera is packed away in a box somewhere so this little cutie will have to do...the other google moving images were too cheeseball for our tastes.

see you tuesday and thanks for all your kind words, support and well wishes!!!

feeling the love

valentine's day is right around the corner.  but wait. don't get all "corporate holiday blah blah blah" on me!  valentine's day is GREAT because it's a day to show everyone, not just a boyfriend or girlfriend, how much you love and appreciate them.  call me overly cheery, but i love this holiday...and not just because of all the confectionery treats (what can i say, i'm a sucker for a good conversation heart).  despite the moving madness, we have secured a very formidable valentine's day card collection that you really must stop in to snatch up.  while we have the always direct "i love you" and sweet heart cards, we've also picked up the less lovey-dovey cat with antlers and red roaring monster cards from our new friends at yellow owl workshop.  i mean, just because you love someone doesn't mean you have to be a sap about it.

IN OTHER NEWS:  one thing we ARE totally sappy about is our four-legged friends.  we just cannot keep a straight face around a good (or bad) pup.  especially one who needs a home.  we got word the other day from a dear friend about some black lab/mix puppies that were found in a box (!!) in the middle of the road (what is wrong with people?!).  our hearts are breaking for these sweeties, and we're desperately trying to find them happy, loving homes.  so...if you need a valentine this year, and want a four-legged friend in your life, let us know and we'll put you in touch with the pups' foster dad.

this sale's for you (and no, we don't mean katie)

you guys sure are sticklers...always asking us where the heck we are.  we're

so sorry that it's been two months since we've given you a glimpse into our

little rps lives, but trust us, the last two months have been crazy and you

may have been terrified by what you would have seen.  lots and lots has been

going on around here.  christmas is always a blur which we love.  we get so

wrapped up in helping people find the perfect holiday gift that the next

thing you know it's 4:30 and no one's had lunch.  and we are so thankful

that you came out in droves to support us, especially in this precarious

economy.  thank you thank you!  our 2009 mantra is all about streamlining

and not making things harder than they need to be.  that being said, around

late february/early march, we're packing things up down here and moving

across town to be with our sister store scarpa (which if you haven't gotten

wind of scarpa yet, we're sorry...the shoes, handbags, and accessories are

divine and your wallet may become a little lighter as a result).  not only

will it allow the boss-in-chief amy to streamline her own life by having her

two fabulous businesses in one spot, but it'll be easier for you to get to

us...there's TONS of parking over at barracks road!  because of this big

move we need to streamline for our new space and pretty much everything in

the store is 40% off (no, not everything...we do need to have something to

move, after all). you must stop in to see what kind of goodness you can

snatch up.

also, while we have your attention:  take note of our new winter hours which

are tuesday-saturday 10am-6pm.

snaps to you

you know, the internet can sometimes feel like a big city...despite being surrounded by tens of thousands of people, you can still feel all alone.  we sort of felt that way about our blog.  we're new to the blog game, and honestly we weren't sure if anyone was even reading.  couple this uncertainty with the hustle and bustle of the everyday demands of our shop, and, well, our little blog had fallen by the wayside.  until we got a much needed and appreciated email asking why the heck we hadn't been keeping everybody in the loop.  turns out, just because you don't comment doesn't mean you don't care.  so our mad props/high five/gold star/double thumbs up/snaps to you award goes to debby for giving us the kickstart we needed to give this blog the love it rightfully deserves.  thanks for keeping the faith and holding us accountable.

i can see russia from my house

election fever is spreading here in charlottesville and probably even more so since our once solid red state could go either way this year. michelle obama and jill biden came to uva, the campaign offices are open day and night, and well, i can't count how many times i've been asked if i'm registered to vote. as the boss lady so aptly commented today, "we're living history."

at rps we're doing our part to get out the vote. you must get your hands on the nifty vote cards from our friends at set! editions. these simple little white cards take the less is more approach with a single word printed in red: vote. point taken.

Vote293

whatever your political affiliation you have to admit that snl was pretty darn funny this past weekend and tina fey is a dead ringer as the republican vice presidential candidate. we just can't stop watching.

newsflash: we'll be unveiling our election 2008 window in the coming week so make sure you amble down second street northeast whether on your way to a political rally or zocalo for dinner.

NFT: chicago (rps style)

Chicago287

this past weekend i went to chicago with some college friends to run a half marathon. having never been to the windy city, i spent the weeks prior asking around for things to do. deep dish, wrigley field, i got the usual schpeel. when i asked my friend dan at mudhouse if he had any recommendations, without missing a beat he named this fabulous coffee joint i had to check out. nevermind that i don't drink coffee and dan has known this about me for years. it struck me as interesting that people in niche industries like to check out their compadres when visiting other cities. and i'm no different. the only thing i really truly HAD TO DO in chicago was check out a stationery store i've been hearing about called greer.

trekking a couple miles through the rain, greer did not disappoint. and on that especially gloomy day, greer proved to be a warm and welcoming refuge from the rain. the sales people were polite yet kept their distance allowing me to wander and discover all the treats and treasures beautifully displayed. it made me smile to see that greer carried many of the same vendors that we do here at rps (chicago locals la familia green and snow and graham and rps favorite set! editions among them). it was also fun to turn the tables a bit and experience a stationery store as a customer rather than a sales person. i scored some fabulous russell + hazel binders on sale (!) and discovered some new card companies that i'm clamoring to get here. who doesn't need a card with chuck norris telling you that you kick ass?!

Chucknorris286

while there were two more days to my weekend in the windy city (and that pesky half marathon), my trip felt complete upon leaving greer. i came, i saw, i purchased. good day, indeed.
