rock paper scissors strives to bring you top brands in paper goods (and more!) from around the globe, but that doesn't mean we should forget some of the talented artists that live in our very own backyard! customers always ask if we carry any goods made locally or by locals - and the answer is an overwhelming yes! here's a little summary (in alphabetical order, so as not to give preferential treatment!):
sounds fun, and it is -- for all ages! kids young and old enjoy putting these puzzles together. add to your mounted trophy collection with a moose, an elephant, a deer, a rhino, or a bison. NEW! wayne the bass fish and the tex the longhorn! and it's all made from recycled cardboard, right here in Charlottesville.
byCARY
if you've been to the Charlottesville Farmer's Market, you've surely seen Cary's smiling face. so fun to work with and her designs, inspired by nature, are always dipped in fabulous color palettes. note sets and coasters are the mainstay at rock paper scissors. to know her is to love her!
FORGETFUL GENTLEMAN
started as a Darden B-School project by the dubbed "original forgetful gentlemen" Nate and Brett, there's no turning back now. Featured in Business Week most recently, these two modest guys created a "revolutionary correspondence system that makes it easy for the modren man to write and send meaningful handwritten notes," and have been picked up by the likes of Nieman Marcus. but why shop big box when you can shop local?
KAMAL
kamal lives in Richmond, so while it's not in our exact backyard, it's close enough! and her designs are so inspiring. drawing on her cultural background, her individual cards are great for thank you's, a good luck message, simultaneously sympathy or a new birth (almost evoking the cycle of life), anniversary, or "just because." her paper coasters step a party up a stylish notch, too! and her write-in invites are the best... see for yourself.
KATE BARTON
the grow your own roots movement just keeps growing... and painter (and tee-shirt designer) Kathryn Dale Barton of Skylight Studios has her postcards with the same design available in store. just $2 each! spread the design love.
LAUREL DENISE
what more can we say about laurel denise jewelry? we love her! the sterling silver necklaces are stunning, as one or layered with many. fun, inspirational words capture who you are as a person. make a request! or the laser engraved leather necklaces and bracelets make for a whole new look. my fave saying that she's coined: life whispers, listen closely. what's yours?
LINDSEY MEARS
you may recognize Lindsey from our grand re-opening event where she led mini bookbinding workshops using the pamplet stitch. her more sophisticated wares are available in store -- old books (even reader's digest) have been upcycled into journals; woodblock letterpress books make for great notetaking. truly one of a kind! keep an eye out - we're doing another book binding workshop on December 1st from 6-8pm. call for more details. RED BIRD INK
julia farill grew up in Charlottesville but lives in Atlanta. we think that counts for local love! some of her cards are even inspired by walks on the Monticello trail. check out her mustachio notes, and the beer and cheers coasters (you may have already caught her numbers coasters on our facebook site. there's so much we like, it's hard to choose. and you know she must be good if Crane's commissioned a line with her!
ROWENA HALPIN of A ReAL CarD
a long time supporter of the arts, rowena turns her beautiful paintings into flat printed cards on recycled paper. check her out!
WEEHAH!
just about every day someone comes in asks for Weehah! cards. we try to offer items that aren't available elsewhere, such as her notecard sets and her designed journals. fun and practical all at once! and even though she's in boston now, she started here in the 'ville.
just a little reminder to shop local this holiday... and if you pick out these designers, you're doing DOUBLE DUTY!
Yay for local! So many talented Charlottesvillians!!
